An AI assistant that can explain a piece of code is useful. An agent that can modify that code, execute commands and connect to other tools introduces a different set of possibilities.

It also introduces decisions about permissions, reliability and control.

Two open-source projects worth examining in this space are Cline and goose.

Both offer AI-assisted task execution, but their documented interfaces and intended uses have different emphases.

This is an initial examination of their official documentation, not a hands-on performance comparison.

Cline: AI Assistance Inside Development Workflows

Project: Cline

Cline is an open-source AI coding agent with integrations for development environments and a command-line interface.

Its capabilities include inspecting code, editing project files, executing commands and using additional tools.

This makes it relevant to development activities where a programmer wants assistance beyond code completion.

For example, an agent might be asked to inspect a particular module, identify related files or help implement a change.

An important question to keep in mind is however, how much of the task should be carried out automatically ?.

Approval and model configuration

Cline documents configurable tool approvals.

These allow different actions to be handled according to their risk, rather than requiring every operation to be treated identically.

The project also supports multiple AI model providers, including configurations using separate provider credentials.

That flexibility introduces another consideration: the open-source agent itself and the cost of the model powering it are separate matters.

goose: An Agent for Broader Local Workflows

Project: goose

goose is another open-source AI agent, but it presents itself as a general-purpose local tool.

Alongside software development, its intended applications include research, writing, data analysis and workflow automation.

It offers a desktop application, a command-line interface and an API.

The project also supports external tool connections through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

This broadens the range of tasks an agent could potentially carry out beyond working with source code.

The importance of permission modes

One particularly relevant detail appears in goose's permission documentation.

The project describes several operation modes, including:

Autonomous Mode, allowing actions without individual approval prompts.

Manual Approval, requiring confirmation for tool use.

Smart Approval, applying selective approval behavior.

Chat Only, disabling tool execution.

According to the documentation, Autonomous Mode is the default.

That is something users should understand before allowing an agent to operate in a sensitive environment.

What Separates the Two?

The clearest distinction in their published descriptions is emphasis.

Cline places coding and development workflows at the center of its experience.

goose presents a broader local agent environment for software development and other automation tasks.

However, this isn't a strict division. Cline also has CLI, desktop and SDK capabilities, while goose can perform software development tasks.

Neither should be judged solely by its homepage description.

What Would Be Worth Testing?

A practical comparison should examine actual behavior rather than the number of advertised features.

Useful questions include:

How well does each agent understand an unfamiliar codebase?

What happens when an operation requires modifying several related files?

How clearly are commands and file changes presented for approval?

Can the agent work within a restricted test environment?

How does its behavior change when using different supported models?

What are the operational costs and hardware requirements?

For any hands-on evaluation, an isolated project with known test cases would be a more appropriate starting point than a live production environment.

Current Assessment

Both Cline and goose appear worth further investigation based on their documentation.

Their open-source availability and support for multiple model providers make them interesting options for developers considering agent-assisted workflows.

That does not establish which is more reliable, safer or better suited to a particular project.

Assessment: Documentation reviewed. No independent hands-on testing completed.

Current status: Active Development & Testing

Two software projects are currently receiving attention within the Kingsmaking101 ecosystem: Socials Sniffer Outreach and Projects Sniffer.

They tackle different problems. One focuses on how outreach campaigns are organized and managed. The other helps developers understand the structure and relationships inside software projects.

Both are still being developed and tested. Here's where things stand.

01 | Socials Sniffer Outreach: Campaign Automation & Management

Development stage: Implementation & Testing

Socials Sniffer Outreach (SSO) is part of the wider Socials Sniffer (SS) ecosystem.

The project is being developed to help manage and automate outreach campaigns across communication channels, including email and Instagram.

Latest progress: The Template Studio

A significant part of the current work involves a unified Template Studio.

Campaign messages often require adjustments depending on their purpose, audience and delivery channel. The Template Studio is intended to make that process easier by allowing messages to be created, customized, organized and previewed using reusable content blocks.

Rather than repeatedly rebuilding message layouts, the aim is to establish a more manageable structure for working with campaign content.

The new editor layout and preview foundation have undergone initial testing.

Controlled testing of reusable message-block creation is also underway. This is an important part of establishing how individual pieces of content will be managed inside the editor.

What's currently being worked on?

The next challenge is connecting the template-building experience to actual campaign message rendering.

Creating a message inside an editor is one part of the process. Ensuring that its content is handled correctly when used in a campaign is another.

That connection needs to be validated without compromising the existing safeguards around automated delivery.

Next milestone

Complete the template integration, validate the workflow and prepare the changes for controlled deployment.

The feature remains in development and testing.

02 | Projects Sniffer: Software Architecture & Codebase Analysis

Development stage: Refinement & Testing

Projects Sniffer is a developer tool designed to inspect software projects and provide structured information about their architecture, dependencies, source files and code relationships.

Understanding an unfamiliar codebase can take considerable effort, particularly when the project contains numerous modules and interconnected components.

Projects Sniffer is being developed to make that exploration and documentation process more manageable.

Latest progress: Cleaning up the Python code

Recent work has focused on simplifying and standardizing the project's internal Python implementation.

This is primarily refinement work rather than the introduction of new features.

The intention is to make the existing code easier to maintain and work with, while preserving the behavior of the analysis tools.

Recent cleanup changes have passed automated tests and behavior-preservation checks.

That validation matters because even changes intended to affect only formatting need to be reviewed carefully in a tool that analyzes other software.

What's currently being worked on?

The remaining formatting cleanup is still underway.

The current priority is to complete that work and confirm that the analysis and tracing features continue behaving as intended.

The aim is to finish the maintenance work without introducing unnecessary changes to existing functionality.

Next milestone

Complete the remaining cleanup, perform final validation and prepare the changes for integration.

Behind the Build: Why these updates matter

Neither project is at the same point in development.

Socials Sniffer Outreach is working through the integration of its template-building experience, while Projects Sniffer is concentrating on improving its existing Python codebase.

They also illustrate two different parts of software development.

Some work introduces new functionality. Other work makes existing functionality more reliable, maintainable or easier to extend.

Both deserve attention, even when there isn't a major release to announce.

For now, the focus remains on implementing the next pieces, testing the changes and making sure unfinished features aren't rushed into production.

Further development updates will document what changes as these projects progress.
